RV Mattresses — Short Queen, RV King & Bunk Sizes

RV Mattresses · Short Queen · RV King · Bunk Sizes

RV mattresses in the sizes RVs actually use.

Most RV beds are not home sizes. The queen in a travel trailer is usually a short queen, the king is narrower than the one in your house, and the bunks were cut to whatever the floorplan allowed. Texan Mattress Montgomery lists the full RV size run — short queens, three RV king footprints, short kings and fulls, Olympic queens and eight bunk sizes — with the price on every size, so you can match your platform exactly instead of settling for close enough.

Measure first

How to measure your RV bed

RV mattress sizes are close to home sizes but rarely equal to them, and a two-inch mistake is the difference between a perfect fit and a mattress that fights the slide-out. Four checks before you order:

1. Measure the platform, not the old mattress

Old RV mattresses compress and shrink at the edges. Measure the bare platform: width at the head, middle and foot (wardrobes and cabinets often pinch one end), and length from the head wall to the platform edge. Order the size that matches the platform, not the worn-out mattress coming off it.

2. Check height twice — slide in, slide out

If the bed sits in or under a slide-out, measure the clearance with the slide fully retracted: that is the tightest the space ever gets, and the mattress has to live there while you drive. Add your pillow and sleeper height on top of the mattress before you pick a profile.

3. Mind corners, doors and guardrails

Note any cut or rounded corners on the platform — many RV beds clip the foot corners to save walkway. Check the entry door and hallway width the mattress has to pass through. On bunks, confirm the guardrail will still extend above the top of the new mattress and check overhead clearance for the sleeper.

4. Why RV sizes run smaller

Manufacturers trim home sizes to fit floorplans: a 60x80 queen becomes a 60x74 short queen, a 76x80 king becomes a 70- or 72-inch-wide RV king, and bunks are cut to the cubby. That is why a standard mattress overhangs, bunches against cabinets, or keeps a slide from closing — and why the exact size is worth ordering.

RV mattress FAQs

Questions RVers ask us

What size is a short queen RV mattress?

A short queen measures 60 inches wide by 74 inches long — the same width as a standard queen, but 6 inches shorter. It is the most common mattress size in RVs and travel trailers. We carry short queens in six models, starting at $366.80 in the RV mattress collection.

What is an RV king, and how is it different from a regular king?

A standard king is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long — too wide for most RV bedrooms and slide-outs. RV kings trim the footprint: 70x74, 70x80 and 72x80 are the common footprints, and a short king at 72x75 shows up in larger fifth wheels. We stock all three RV king footprints, starting at $559.30.

Will a regular queen mattress fit in my RV?

Usually not well. A standard queen is 60x80, while most RV queen platforms are built for the 60x74 short queen. A standard queen overhangs the platform by 6 inches, which can block the walkway at the foot of the bed, crowd cabinets, and interfere with a slide-out closing. Measure your platform first — if it is 74 inches long, order the short queen.

How thick should an RV mattress be?

It depends on your clearance. Bunks and cab-over beds usually need a low profile, around 6 to 8 inches, so the guardrail still extends above the mattress and nobody sleeps inches from the ceiling. A primary bed with a slide-out commonly takes 10 to 12 inches — measure the space with the slide fully in before you choose. Our CopperFlex Essential comes in five heights, from 6 to 14 inches, for exactly this reason.

What sizes do RV bunk mattresses come in?

RV bunks are not standardized — every manufacturer cuts the cubby differently. The sizes we stock are 28x75, 30x74, 30x75, 30x80, 32x74, 34x75, 35x79 and 42x80, starting at $269.50. Measure the bunk platform wall to wall, including any cut corners, before ordering.

Do you ship RV mattresses, or do I have to pick up in Montgomery?

Both. RV mattresses ship nationwide, direct to your home or another address you give us. If you are local to Montgomery and Lake Conroe, delivery is free white glove delivery with free haul-away of your old mattress. Ordered mattresses typically arrive in 10 to 14 days; we confirm the timing for the exact mattress before you buy.

Can I use regular sheets on an RV mattress?

Standard sheets on a short or narrow RV size will bunch, slip and wear out faster. Look for sheets made in your RV size, and match the pocket depth to your mattress height — a 6-inch bunk mattress drowns in deep-pocket queen sheets. Tell us your size and height and we will check what we carry to fit it.
