What Happens During Deep Sleep? Your Sleep Cycles Explained

What Happens While You Sleep

Sleep is an active, organized process rather than simple โ€œoff time.โ€ According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the brain and body cycle through non-REM and REM sleep throughout the night. A cycle commonly restarts every 80 to 100 minutes, and many people complete four to six cycles. Brief awakenings between cycles can also occur.

The Four Sleep Stages

Current sleep medicine groups sleep into three non-REM stages followed by REM sleep:

  • Stage 1: The transition from wakefulness into sleep. This is the lightest stage and is usually brief.
  • Stage 2: You are asleep, and brain activity, breathing, and heart rate begin settling into sleep patterns. People generally spend a substantial portion of the night in this stage.
  • Stage 3: Also called deep sleep or slow-wave sleep because of its characteristic brain-wave pattern. More Stage 3 sleep usually occurs earlier in the night.
  • REM sleep: Brain activity becomes more similar to wakefulness, vivid dreaming commonly occurs, and the muscles normally become temporarily relaxed. REM periods tend to become longer later in the night.

What Deep Sleep and REM Mean

Deep sleep and REM are both normal parts of a full night of sleep, but their functions are sometimes oversimplified in consumer articles. Sleep supports many body systems, while sufficient, good-quality sleep is associated with attention, memory, mood, physical health, and daytime functioning. No mattress can create a particular sleep stage or guarantee more deep sleep or REM sleep.

Why Sleep Continuity Matters

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes quality sleep as sleep that is both uninterrupted and refreshing. Repeatedly waking during the night or feeling tired after adequate time in bed can be signs of poor sleep quality. Occasional waking is common; persistent sleep difficulty, loud snoring, gasping, or excessive daytime sleepiness should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Where Your Mattress Fits

A mattress is one part of the sleep environment, not a medical treatment. A surface that matches your comfort preference may make it easier to settle in without discomfort. Couples may also want to compare motion isolation, while warm sleepers may want to consider airflow, bedding, and room temperature. These features can improve comfort, but individual results vary.

When trying a mattress, spend several minutes in your normal sleep position and notice pressure, support, ease of movement, and edge stability. Our mattress firmness guide explains what to compare by sleep position.
